The Saskatchewan Trucking Association  still opposes the implementation of the federal carbon tax. Because Saskatchewan is a listed province (a backstop jurisdiction the federal government forced the tax on), Saskatchewan companies are required to track the location of diesel fuel purchases and the where this fuel is consumed.

Employers are grouped together based on the type of work they do. The structure consists of three levels, classes, industry groups and rate codes. For example, if your primary business activity is operating a charter bus service, you would be part of the Transportation class, in industry group T4, which is part of rate code T42 – Transportation, Courier, Commercial Bus rate. The classification structure has 10 classes, 33 industry groups, and 50 rate codes.

Employers classified in the same rate code all pay the same rate to cover the cost of insurance in their rate code, this is called collective liability. Trucking companies fall into rate code T42. So, if you see something referring to T42, these are the subcategories (or sub-codes) that fall under T42 classification:

1. Interprovincial trucking, U.S.-based trucking
2. Mail hauling, inter urban
3. Local and provincial hauling, household movers, grain hauling
4. Commercial bus operations including maintenance
5. Messenger, courier and armoured car service, express agent, mobile escort (pilot car)
6. Expediting, hot shot service
7. Soft drink distribution as a business
8. Urban mail service
9. Cold storage
10. Portable toilet rentals
11. Forwarding companies and warehousing as a business
12. Sundry trucking, water hauling, oil hauling outside battery
13. Garbage collecting, waste disposal, septic tank cleaning, hydro blast (locate underground lines) tire collection/distribution
14. Mobile steam cleaning
15. Stevedoring, barging, transportation by water
16. Log and pulpwood hauling In Saskatchewan, rate code T42 (trucking) has the highest rate code out of all industries. That means that based on the frequency and severity of the injury, trucking          companies in Saskatchewan pay more per payroll dollar than any other industry in Saskatchewan. This is not only a financial burden to the company, it also affects employees by leaving less money for salaries and wages. By ensuring that everyone is safe at work, and using best practices to prevent injuries, this will lead to a lower rate code, and will benefit everyone in the long run – financially, and health-wise.
