On April 30, the BC Trucking Association (BCTA) proudly participated in Western Women with Drive, Trucking HR Canada’s national conference dedicated to empowering women in Canada’s trucking and logistics industry. Held in Calgary, the event brought together industry leaders, changemakers, and advocates for equity and inclusion in the workplace.

It was an inspiring day full of insights, storytelling, and momentum for positive change. From mainstage keynotes to regional panels, every conversation reinforced the importance of building diverse leadership, investing in workplace culture, and showing up for each other in an increasingly complex and fast-paced world.

Our Commitment: Signing the Women’s Leadership Accord

A key moment for BCTA during the event was proudly signing the Women’s Leadership Accord, a national initiative created by Trucking HR Canada and supported by Women and Gender Equality Canada. The Accord is a public commitment to advancing gender diversity through leadership accountability, workplace inclusion, and intentional action.

“Signing the accord is more than symbolic – it is a commitment to act,” said Angela Splinter, CEO, Trucking HR Canada. “BCTA is an industry leader in taking meaningful steps to showcase gender equity as good business”.

For BCTA, this includes evaluating internal policies, supporting diverse leadership across the sector, and promoting inclusive practices to our members and partners.

Inspiration from Angela Champ: Staying Relevant and Ready in Challenging Times

The day’s programming opened with a powerful keynote from Angela Champ, one of Canada’s top 20 HR leaders on the HRD Global 100 and author of The Squiggly Line Career. Angela emphasized the importance of strategic thinking during times of crisis. She encouraged attendees to stay ready by continuously learning about their industry and organization, and by asking themselves, “What now?” to remain responsive to immediate challenges.

To prepare for what’s ahead, she suggested creating a personal advisory council to help explore “What’s next?” and guide future decisions. Angela also highlighted the value of building a
strong personal brand, not only to stay relevant but to stand out as a leader in uncertain times.

The Power of Human Connection: Dr. Jody Carrington on Rebuilding Relationships

Another standout speaker was Dr. Jody Carrington, a bestselling author and psychologist known for her raw, funny, and deeply insightful approach to human connection. Her message struck a chord in a post-pandemic world where many feel more disconnected than ever.

“We are neurobiologically wired for connection. We are not going to get good enough to automate relationships,” Dr. Carrington told the audience. “The only AI that will matter is authentic interaction.”

In an industry that often grapples with isolation, mental health challenges, and high turnover, her message resonated deeply. Dr. Carrington reminded us that re-establishing trust and connection in our workplaces is not just “nice to have.” It is essential to attract and retain talent.

Collaboration Across the West: Regional Panel on Workforce Strategies

BCTA also joined representatives from the Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA), Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA), and Manitoba Trucking Association (MTA) for a panel on regional workforce strategies. Together, we shared insights on how each province is tackling labour issues, supporting underrepresented groups, and promoting careers in trucking.

From driver training and mentorship programs to strategic partnerships with government agencies, the panel showcased tangible efforts being made across Western Canada.

Looking Ahead

As BCTA reflects on its participation at Women with Drive, one message stands out: diversity, equity, and inclusion are not side projects – they are foundational to our industry’s future.

“We are committed to leading by example,” said Earle. “Whether it is through our advocacy, our partnerships, or our internal practices, we will continue pushing for a more inclusive, connected, and innovative trucking industry.”

BCTA thanks Trucking HR Canada for hosting a truly impactful event and looks forward to returning next year, hopefully with even more progress to celebrate.
